Position Overview

The Laboratory Service Engineer II (LSE II) is mainly responsible for the performance and documentation of routine maintenance, installation, and low to high complexity repair activities on various laboratory equipment and instrumentation. The scope of laboratory equipment is including but not limited to centrifuges, mixers, shakers, automated liquid handling robots, and custom automation equipment. The LSE II may also support and/or collaborate on the creation of SOPs, process improvement efforts, an new equipment installation initiatives. Environments where work is performed may include designated workshop locations, clinical laboratories, R&D laboratories, and manufacturing and quality control laboratories. The individual in this role will continuously work with other Lab Service Engineers (LSE) and the laboratory teams to ensure proper instrument function and to troubleshoot any system concerns

Essential Duties

include but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintain program for preventative maintenance (PM) and calibration of all laboratory equipment (e.g., centrifuges, liquid handlers, orbital shakers, etc.).
  • Perform troubleshooting activities and provide Level 1 service; coordinate with more senior LSE's, departmental leadership, technical services, and vendors to address escalated service concerns.
  • Track all service activities utilizing system(s) developed in accordance with service policies and procedures.
  • Maintain and continuously develop personal knowledge and expertise related to the service of complex clinical laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure all service documentation is complete, timely, and accurate following Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
  • Collaborate/support and/or perform relocation, installation, and qualification of various laboratory equipment per service policies.
  • Recommend and implement changes to ensure ongoing high-quality performance of laboratory equipment.
  • Perform all service activities in compliance with all relevant safety and regulatory bodies (e.g., OSHA, CAP, CLIA, etc.).
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Adaptable, open to change, and the ability to work in ambiguous situations while responding to new information and unexpected circumstances.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills; ability to easily convey concepts and priorities, as well as an ability to solicit feedback and inputs.

  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds for approximately 15% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 35% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Ability to employ gross and fine motor skills during the installation, servicing, and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
  • Ability and means to travel between local Exact Sciences locations.
  • Ability to travel up to 5% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Technology, Molecular Biology, Electronics, or related field; or Associates degree and 2 years of relevant experience as outlined in the essential duties in lieu of Bachelor's degree; or High School diploma/General Education diploma and 4 years of relevant experience as outlined in the essential duties in lieu of Bachelor's degree.
  • 3+ years of experience operating and/or servicing laboratory/medical equipment.
  • Basic computer skills to include Internet navigation, Email usage, and word processing.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience with Quality Systems and documentation requirements.
  • Experience with Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS).
  • Experience with Digital Pathology Imaging.
  • Experience maintaining Histology equipment.
  • Experience loading and/or updating software applications.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude relevant to maintenance and repair of complex laboratory equipment, such as liquid handling robots.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan workload, allocate tasks, and scale operations to align with business priorities.
  • Working knowledge of clinical laboratory service operations and activities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office to include Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Salary Range:

$50,000.00 - $81,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to receive company stock upon hire as well as annually.
